KUALA LUMPUR: An 80-year-old woman suffered a staggering loss of RM10 million after being deceived by an investment scheme based on cryptocurrency known as 'Accerx.Com.'
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf, expressed sympathy for the significant loss experienced by the woman who fell prey to the nonexistent investment scheme.
Through a police report made yesterday, the victim, who is also a retiree, said that she joined the investment scheme after being added to a WhatsApp group promoting a cryptocurrency-based investment scheme known as 'accerx.com.'
"Through the group, the victim dealt with a man who claimed to advance money for the purchase of cryptocurrency.
"The victim was asked to make repayments after the successful purchase of the cryptocurrency," he said in a statement today.
Ramli said, deceived by the tactics used, the victim made 13 payment transactions to several bank accounts under the names of eight different companies, involving a total amount paid of RM10,455,288.
"The victim began to doubt the legitimacy of the investment when asked to make additional payments for various reasons.
"The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code," he said.
He added that the CCID assures a thorough investigation to ensure the dismantling of this investment fraud syndicate.
"As a preventive measure, the public, especially the elderly, are advised to be more cautious and not easily believe in online investment offers promoted through social media.
"Conduct checks with relevant agencies, including Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC), before deciding to join any investment scheme," he said.
