PUTRAJAYA: Police have identified the suspected gunman in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 shooting as Hafizul Harawi, 38.
Hafizul has also been identified as the husband and business partner of the intended victim.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain confirmed this at a press conference at KLIA today.
In the 1.20am incident, Shuhaily said the 38-year-old suspect initially threw firecrackers (mercun), injuring two members of the public.
"He then approached the victim, who is his wife, and fired two shots at close range.
"One of the shots hit his wife's bodyguard before he fled the scene to the parking area at Level 2 of Block C, where he parked his car," he said.
He added that police have launched operations to arrest him and warned the public not to approach the suspect or to take the law into their own hands.
"I strongly urged the suspect to cooperate by surrendering himself to any police station. Whatever happens next, will not correct the first incident.
"In this context, the police have identified the suspect as armed and dangerous.
"Therefore, if the members of the public see this suspect, do share information with the police but do not act on your own," he said, adding that the suspect did not have a valid licence to own a gun.
He said the motive behind the incident is still under police investigation and is classified as attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code and the Firearms Act.
