KUALA LUMPUR: Police have never stopped investigating the murder of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, whose remains were discovered in a creek near his residence in Damansara Damai, Petaling Jaya, on Dec 6, last year.
Federal Police Criminal Investigation Department director, Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, said police had not given up, adding that the case was still 'active', and that they are awaiting new leads.
"Unfortunately, at the moment, despite a reward being offered by another non-governmental organisation for information on Zayn Rayyan's murder, we have not received any new leads.
"I understand that the public are unhappy with the update on this case, but we have never forgotten Zayn Rayyan.
"Personally, it is something that I owe to the people. If I were to retire without being able to solve this case, that would be one of my failures," he told a press conference today.
Shuhaily added: "We have tried our best and have exhausted all avenues".
"My boys (the police) are still on the ground, hoping to get new leads.
"What we got that day, was a secondary crime scene that had been tampered with, making investigations difficult.
"The presence of the public who had wanted to help, indirectly destroyed the evidence. Don't get me wrong. I'm not blaming the public because everyone tried their best to help.
"As I said, personally, I take that as a failure. As much as I want to provide justice for the family, I am not able to do so at this moment."
Shuhaily added the same goes for the arson attack on the residence of Beruas Member of Parliament (MP), Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham, in Taman Semarak Jaya, Ayer Tawar, Perak, on Jan 10.
"We have exhausted all our resources. That's another case that we still owe.
"But rest assured, we will never stop investigating."
