Immigration Dept withdraws deportation order against Bangladeshi opposition politician MA Quayum

KUALA LUMPUR: The Immigration Department has withdrawn its deportation order against Bangladeshi opposition politician M.A. Quayum.

High Court judge K. Muniandy, in recording a consent judgment, also ordered Quayum to be released to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for the purpose of resettlement in a third country.

"The applicant and their dependents will not be detained or deported from Malaysia while awaiting resettlement to a third country, provided that they do not commit any criminal offences and are not charged in any court.

"The applicant must leave the country within a reasonable period after the resettlement process to a third country is completed.

"The applicant to withdraw his habeas corpus application at the Kuala Lumpur High Court here without the liberty to refile.

"The applicant will not file any civil action related to their arrest and detention from Jan 12 to Feb 8, 2024," said the court.

On Jan 18, the same court granted a stay on deportation order against the leader of Bangladeshi Nationalist Party who was arrested in a joint operation between the police and Bangladeshi intelligence.
