PETALING JAYA: Police have obtained a six-day remand order extension against the parents of autistic boy Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, who was found dead near a river at his home in Damansara Damai on Dec 6 last year.
The couple's counsel Fahmi Abd Moin said magistrate Ainaa Muhamad Kamal granted the extension following the expiration of an earlier seven-day remand.
"During proceedings, a senior police investigating officer had applied for a further seven-day remand order based on the probes conducted against my clients.
"However, we objected on grounds that they both do not need to be arrested further and they should be released.
"But the magistrate found reasons to remand them and allowed another six days remand from today until next Wednesday. On Wednesday, it will be final. Whether there is a case or not, they must be released.
"I have explained this to the couple and they understand. They are being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder," he said after proceedings.
Fahmi was assisted by co-counsel Ilyani Khuszairy.
The media were not allowed to cover the remand order application proceedings.
Earlier, the boy's parents, both aged 28, were brought to the court complex to have their remand order extended after the initial one granted on June 1 expires today.
Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan had yesterday said they would apply for an extension of remand against the parents of the six-year-old boy.
Investigations so far included the seizure of the couple's handphones as well as the recording of statements of the boy's two family members and a former babysitter.
On May 31, the couple were arrested at about 11am at their family home in Puncak Alam by the Selangor Criminal Investigation Department.
The couple's initial counsel Mahmud Abdul Jumaat withdrew a few days after representing them at the remand application proceedings following their arrest.
On June 5, Fahmi confirmed he was appointed to represent the couple by their family.
On Dec 6, 2023, Zayn Rayyan was found dead at a stream near Apartment Idaman, Damansara Damai, at 10pm.
The boy's body was found about 200 metres from his home by the public who participated in the search operations following a report about his disappearance.
Zayn Rayyan was confirmed to be killed based on the autopsy conducted, which found injuries to his neck and body.
