PETALING JAYA: Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin's paternal grandparents have been detained to facilitate investigations on the boy's murder.
Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that the couple were detained this afternoon.
"Yes, his grandfather and grandmother were detained at 2.30pm today. They were detained in Subang Bestari.
"The application for remand on them will be made at the Petaling Jaya court tomorrow," he told Berita Harian.
It is understood that the couple was detained by members of the Serious Crimes Division (D9) of state police Criminal Investigation Department.
Earlier today, the counsels representing Zayn Rayyan's mother had objected to the police's application to record her guilty plea before a magistrate.
Counsel Fahmi Abd Moin and Mahmud Jumaat made their objections against the police's application under Section 26(1) of the Evidence Act before Petaling Jaya magistrate Zhafran Rahim Hamzah during proceedings held in chambers.
Fahmi said an investigating officer had brought the mother to the magistrate's court with the purpose of extracting a guilty plea from the mother.
The boy's father was not produced in court today.
Mahmud had said that Zayn Rayyan's mother did not make a plea but only gave a statement today.
Mahmud said today's closed-court session aimed to obtain the suspect's statement in her defence.
Both counsels also said that their objections as well as the mother's statements were recorded by the magistrate.
Fahmi, who was assisted by co-counsel Ilyani Khuszairy, confirmed that he would represent the boy's father while Mahmud will appear for the mother.
Fahmi said after recording his objections, the mother had requested for only Mahmud to stay on during the proceedings.
Fahmi said the couple's 13-day remand order to facilitate murder investigations would expire tomorrow.
"Tomorrow is the day of decision. I believe the investigation paper is with the Attorney-General's Chambers and we will know who will be released or who will be charged.
"There will no more extension to the remand order," Fahmi said earlier today.
