KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed man was yesterday arrested on suspicion of raping a 16-year-old girl, which led to her pregnancy at Flat Cahaya, Ampang, near here.
The victim was discovered to be pregnant while undergoing treatment at a government hospital for low blood pressure about 1am last Tuesday.
Ampang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said a medical officer suspected the victim was pregnant after finding her red blood cell count was low.
Further examination found that the patient was 32 weeks pregnant.
"The 29-year-old male medical officer then made a police report.
"The investigation found that the patient admitted to having sex when she was 15 years old with a boyfriend she had known for a year," he said in a statement today.
Police said the victim, who had not been attending school since 15, had sexual intercourse with the suspect at his residence in Flat Cahaya, Ampang.
The 20-year-old suspect was then arrested at noon yesterday in Wangsa Maju to assist in the investigation.
"The suspect was found to be unemployed, and a urine test turned out negative for drugs.
"The suspect has been remanded until June 28, and the case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code," he said.
If found guilty, the suspect could be imprisoned for up to two years and may also be caned.
