Deputy Dewan Rakyat speaker lodges police report over TikTok account

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor lodged a police report today on a TikTok account which had posted a defamatory video of him.

Ramli said the allegations in the video, uploaded by user @apong606 six days ago, were baseless, irresponsible and seditious.

"It also brings down my dignity as the member of parliament for Cameron Highlands,  the only one representing the Orang Asli community, as well as the deputy speaker of the Dewan Rakyat," he told a press conference held at the Parliament's building.

Ramli said the police report was lodged at the Sentul police station.

He said the police report lodged was under Section 504, 505 (C) and 499 of the Penal Code.

"In addition, a report to the Malaysian Multimedia Communications Commission (MCMC) will also be made under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998."

Asked what could be the reasons behind the post, Ramli said; "I believe that certain quarters were unhappy with my engagement sessions for the proposed amendments to the Federal Constitution and the Aboriginal Peoples Act 1954."

Last month, Ramli said an amendment to the Constitution regarding the interests of the Orang Asli was expected to be tabled by 2027 at the latest.

Early this month, Ramli expressed hope the proposed amendments to the Aboriginal Peoples Act 1954 will receive two-thirds backing of the house.

The proposed amendments would specify that the responsibility for the care of the Orang Asli would fall under federal and state governments and address issues such as land, forestry and community welfare.

Ramli added he is also considering filing a civil suit with a claim of at least RM1 million, in addition to the owner of the account having to make a public apology, after the police investigation is completed.
