KUANTAN: The Pahang Customs Department seized contraband cigarettes and liquor worth RM579,134 in raids on three grocery shops in the Teluk Kalong industrial area in Kemaman, Terengganu, on July 3.
The raiding team detained four workers, including a woman, in their 40s, in the 11.30am operation.
State Customs director Mohd Asri Seman said the team seized 310,512 sticks of cigarettes and 4,932 litres of beer, as well as liquor of various brands and sizes that were on sale on the premises.
"Two workers were detained on the first premises, and one each at the second and third outlets. The team recorded statements from the four before they were released.
"We are tracking down the premises owner to obtain details on the sale of smuggled cigarettes and liquor.
Investigations showed that the contraband items were brought from China via the sea route," he told a press conference at Wisma Kastam here today.
Asri said the presence of Chinese nationals who were working in the industrial area and the demand for contraband items were believed to have prompted the culprits to smuggle and sell the items.
He said the suspects were investigated under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for possession or selling of smuggled cigarettes, beer and liquor, and Section 74(1)(c) of the Excise Act 1976.
Asri urged those with information on smuggling activities to contact the Customs Department at 1300 888 500 or the nearest state Customs headquarters.
