IPOH: The Perak Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has raided a shop in Kampung Kacang Putih here over fake halal logos on snack products.
Its director, Datuk Kamaluddin Ismail, said that during the raid at 12:45 pm yesterday, his officers found several snack products marked with invalid halal logos intended for commercial use.
"Further inspection revealed that the products were intended for retail and wholesale sales across the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia.
"We seized 463 packages of various types of snacks bearing illegal halal logos with an estimated value of RM2,720," he said in a statement today.
The case is under investigation under Order 8(a) of the Trade Description Order (Halal Certification and Marking) 2011, which concerns the offence of falsely certifying food as halal.
The penalty includes a fine of up to RM500,000 for the first offence and RM100,000 for subsequent offences.
He added that the ministry viewed seriously any misuse of halal certificates on food products or goods which violates the Trade Descriptions Act 2011.
"Consumers are urged to notify authorities about any food products suspected of displaying unauthorised halal markings.
"The public can report such cases to the nearest ministry branch," he added.
