TAIPING: A kaya processing factory in Taman Glenview here was raided yesterday over the alleged use of fake halal logos on its products.
Perak Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry director Datuk Kamalludin Ismail said seized 65 of the kaya products and 2,000 pieces of used plastic worth RM452.25 during the 10.45am raid.
He said further inspection of the final product found that there was a halal logo on the packaging.
"However, the business owner failed to present a valid Malaysian Halal Certificate.
"Following this, legal action has been taken under the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Halal Mark) Order 2011 for allegedly using the halal logo without authorisation from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim)," he said in a statement today.
The case is being investigated under Order 8(a) of the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Halal Mark) Order 2011, which concerns the offence of certifying any food as halal.
If convicted, a corporate entity may be fined up to RM500,000 for the first offence and up to RM1 million for subsequent offences.
For individuals who are not corporate entities, the fine may be up to RM250,000 or imprisonment for up to three years, or both.
For subsequent offences, the fine may be up to RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
Kamalludin added that the product was believed to have been for distribution in the state and in Penang.
