Over 1,000 cars used in unlicensed rental services in Langkawi

LANGKAWI: More than 1,000 unlicensed rental vehicles, including private cars, have been detected in illegal rental services offering low rates in Langkawi.

Road Transport Department (RTD) enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said these illegal rental cars are typically stored in special locations to avoid detection by authorities.

"Action will be taken against these illegal rental vehicle services, which are on the RTD's radar.

"We are currently conducting operations to combat this issue, and so far, we have identified more than 1,000 involved vehicles, particularly cars," he said.

According to Muhammad Kifli, the RTD has intensified its operations to tackle this illegal service.

He added that the department regularly advises and advocates for individuals and associations involved in the rental business to apply for proper licences to ensure the safety of renters.

"Despite our efforts, many vehicle owners continue to offer rental services illegally, using private individual licences.

"This illegal car rental business not only violates the law but also harms the local economy.

"It's unfair to those who apply for permits through the correct channels," he said.

To address this issue, the RTD will maintain regular monitoring and enforcement to prevent the proliferation of unlicensed rental vehicles and ensure a fair and legal rental market in Langkawi.
