Woman poorer by more than RM658,000 after falling victim to love scam

ISKANDAR PUTERI: A 38-year-old woman not only had her heart broken but also became RM658,166 poorer after she fell victim to a love scam.

The woman became acquainted with the man via the Telegram online messaging application last month.

Since then, the relationship escalated, and the victim was convinced to become an agent and invest in the man's alleged online cosmetic business.

The victim accepted the offer and made 30 online cash transfers to 11 bank accounts given by the suspect between June 14 and July 12, as agent fees to ensure the cosmetics were delivered to their online customers.

The deception unraveled when the woman, who had been communicating with the man only via Telegram and WhatsApp, made a video call and discovered that he did not match his profile picture.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Kumarasan said that believing she had been duped, the woman lodged a report yesterday.

The case is investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
