SEREMBAN: A 38-year-old housewife became RM200,000 poorer after falling victim to an online job syndicate that promised her a part-time job.
Her ordeal began when she received a message via Telegram about a part-time job, which required her to deposit money into an account in order to receive a commission from the work she performed.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Hatta Che Din said that, attracted by the promised commission, the victim decided to accept the offer.
"She then engaged in the online part-time job and made 19 transactions between April 4 and July 27," he said in a statement.
Hatta added that the victim is believed to have used not only her own money but also borrowed from family members to complete the transactions.
"The victim suffered a loss of RM203,981.85," he said, adding that the investigation is being conducted under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
