Addict nabbed for ramming into constable during drug op

GEORGE TOWN: Police arrested a man believed to be an addict, yesterday, a day after he knocked into a police constable during the Op Tapis Khas near the health clinic in Sungai Dua here.

The incident caused the constable to sustain injuries on his body and head.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Razlam Ab Hamid said the 44-year-old man was detained in Air Itam following tip off and surveillance by the police.

He said, in the 8.20am incident on Tuesday, a police team conducted Op Tapis Khas after receiving information about drug sales to addicts receiving methadone treatment at the health clinic.

"While police tried to arrest him on his motorcycle, the suspect resorted to knocking into the 27-year-old constable to evade arrest.

"This resulted in the constable to sustain injuries on several parts of his body, including his head. He was given early treatment at the health clinic before being sent to the Penang Hospital for further treatment," he said today.

The constable received outpatient treatment and was given sick leave.

"The suspect has previous records for drug and crime-related offences.

"His urine test also came back positive for drugs," he added.

The man has been remanded for further investigation.
