GERIK: A 39-year-old man suspected of pushing his wife into a ravine near KM31.2 of Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway on July 27 has been remanded for a week.
The remand order which starts today and ends on Monday, was granted by magistrate Savinder Singh Jugindar Singh at the magistrate's court here, today.
The seven-day remand is to facilitate investigations under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder which carries a maximum of 20 years' jail upon conviction.
Clad in plain long sleeved t-shirt and black jeans, the suspect arrived at the court at 8.50am, accompanied by policemen from the Criminal Investigation Department.
He then left the court about 50 minutes later in a black police van.
The suspect was previously held in police remand at the Baling district police headquarters in Kedah for six days in relation to a case of causing injury under Section 324 of the Penal Code.
It is also understood that the person injured by the suspect is the man's own brother.
It was reported that police had arrested the man on July 31 for allegedly trying to kill his 32-year-old wife by pushing her into a ravine.
District police chief Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmood said police received information regarding the incident at 2pm the same day through a phone call from a member of the public who reported discovering the woman in the area.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspect had taken her from Kuala Lumpur to Perak, claiming that they were returning to their hometown.
Zulkifli said that later during the journey, an argument ensued between the couple, which escalated to the victim being assaulted and threatened with death by her husband.
