KUALA LUMPUR: Motorists who witnessed a drunk driver ram into a motorcycle ridden by school students in Melaka on Tuesday chased down the man and managed to nab him 4km away before handing him over to police.
The 25-year-old man had fled the scene after he rammed into two 17-year-olds on a motorcycle at the Cheng Heights traffic light junction about 4pm that day.
However, after a 4km-long chase, he was nabbed by other motorists near a restaurant on the Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin highway in Bachang, according to a report in Kosmo!.
Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the victims were riding a Yamaha Ego Avantiz motorcycle on their way home from a secondary school in Cheng.
"The rider was taking his friend home to Krubong, but a Perodua Alza suddenly changed lanes and collided with the victim's motorcycle," he said.
He said both 17-year-old students sustained injuries to their legs and hands.
He added that the motorists who nabbed the drunk driver handed over the man to crime prevention patrol policemen from the Malim station.
Christopher said tests by Melaka Tengah police later confirmed that the man had been driving under the influence of alcohol.
"The driver has been detained at the Melaka Tengah police headquarters' lockup, and a three-day remand order has been issued by the magistrate's court," he said.
Investigations are being conducted under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for drink driving, which carries a fine of between RM1,000 and RM6,000, or jail of up to 12 months, upon conviction.
