MELAKA: A man was sentenced to five months' jail in the Ayer Keroh magistrates court here today for hitting his mother with a motorcycle helmet.
Magistrate Nabilah Nizam meted out the sentence on 35-year-old Ezat Hamidee Abdul Talib after he pleaded guilty.
Ezat Hamidee was accused of intentionally causing injury to his mother, 60-year-old Asiah Mohd Said, by hitting her on the head with a red helmet.
The act was allegedly committed at a house on Jalan Tambak Bugis, Telok Mas, on Aug 4 at 12.30pm.
The charge was for voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons or means, which, upon conviction, carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment, a fine or whipping, or any two of such punishments.
The accused earlier said that his actions were driven by anger after being scolded by his mother and embarrassment when the family found out he had just been released from a rehabilitation centre.
Deputy public prosecutor Wardah Ishhar, however, requested an appropriate sentence as the victim was the accused's biological mother.
The court then sentenced the accused to five months' imprisonment, starting from the date of his arrest on Aug 4.
In the same proceedings, Ezat was also charged with administering methamphetamine to himself at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department office at the Melaka Tengah police headquarters on the same day at 2.30pm.
However, the accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of RM2,000 in one surety, with the case set for mention on Sept 17.
