ALOR STAR: Smugglers of subsidised petrol are feeling the heat from intensified inspections at the Kota Putra Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) in Durian Burung, Padang Terap.
Yesterday, the smugglers dumped a Toyota Camry and a Nissan Cefiro at the border checkpoint.
Kedah Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry office director Muhammad Nizam Jamaludin said the cars were found to be illegally fitted with an additional petrol tank.
"The enforcement team has seized 230 litres of petrol in both vehicles valued at RM517.50.
"Both cars have also been seized for further investigation with a total seizure value of RM20,517.50. We are tracking down the vehicle's owners," he said in a statement today.
A person caught smuggling controlled items could be fined up to RM1 million under Section 21 of the Supply Control Act 1961.
