KUANTAN: A self-employed man who was allegedly involved in a high-speed chase with the police was charged at the magistrate's court here today with trafficking 111kg of cannabis and consuming methamphetamine on Aug 1.
Nasir Hassan, 49, nodded after the charges were read to him before magistrate Raja Norshuzianna Shakila Raja Mamat.
In the first charge, he was accused of trafficking cannabis weighing 111,663.51g about 9.45am near a food court along Jalan Kuantan-Kemaman here.
The charge, framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carries the death penalty or life imprisonment with no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
For the second charge, Nasir was accused of consuming methamphetamine drugs at the Kuantan police headquarters Narcotics Crime Investigation Department about 12.15pm.
The charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, carries the maximum fine of RM5,000 and a jail sentence of not more than two years, upon conviction.
The accused from Rantau Panjang, Kelantan had allegedly committed both the offences on Aug 1 and no plea was recorded.
No bail was offered to the accused as he had been charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Deputy public prosecutor Siti Aisyah Abdul Wahab handled the prosecution, while Nasir appeared unrepresented.
Raja Norshuzianna fixed Nov 13 for the first charge and Oct 16 for the second offence.
It was previously reported that a high-speed chase involving a police Expressway Mobile Patrol Vehicle (EMPV) and a man along the East Coast Expressway Phase 2 (LPT2) ended after the suspect was detained near Sungai Ular here on Aug 1. Police had recovered drugs in the car.
