KUALA LUMPUR: A restaurant in Bandar Sri Permaisuri has landed in trouble after allegedly charging different prices for the same sardine fried rice, an incident that went viral on social media.
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, in a statement yesterday, said it had issued a notice following a viral social media post showing two receipts for the same sardine fried rice, with a price increase of RM1.50 within a day.
The notice, the ministry said, was issued under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 to obtain information on the justification for the price discrepancy.
The statement said an enforcement team from the ministry met the supervisor of the restaurant to facilitate investigations into the issue.
"Investigations showed that the price of the sardine fried rice was listed as RM9 in the menu book, with an additional 30 sen for takeaway packaging.
"For orders and dining at the restaurant, no additional charges are applied except for the price of the food, including the six per cent in Sales and Services Tax," he said.
The ministry added that both receipts, in the viral social media post, had been handed over to the restaurant supervisor for further action.
"The restaurant has been given a stern warning to update prices (in its menu) regularly to prevent customer confusion, comply with the law, and avoid repeating such mistakes.
"The restaurant has apologised for the issue and is willing to contact the complainant to provide explanations or address any concerns," the ministry said.
