KUALA LUMPUR: Police have recorded 860 murder cases nationwide over the past three years, from 2021 to June of this year.
The police revealed that an average of five murder cases occurred weekly during this period.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the total number of cases reported included 243 in 2021, 240 in 2022, 258 in 2023, and 119 cases in the first six months of this year.
"Analysis shows that 657 victims were locals, while 290 were foreigners. The identities of 13 victims could not be determined," he said.
"The victims included 62 children, 106 individuals aged 15 to 25 years, 541 victims aged 26 to 60 years, 98 victims aged 60 and above, and 140 whose ages could not be determined," Razarudin added.
He noted that 95 per cent of the cases were solved due to the efforts of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and public cooperation.
"A total of 1,658 individuals were arrested in connection with these cases, including 950 locals and 708 foreigners.
"Of the 860 murder cases recorded, 323 were believed to have stemmed from arguments and disputes," he said.
Razarudin further disclosed that 62 cases were due to jealousy, 65 involved intoxication, 46 were acts of revenge, and 43 stemmed from robbery and theft.
Additionally, he said 35 cases were believed to be related to abuse, 32 to debts, 20 to drugs, 15 to insanity, 16 to negligence, and 11 to rape.
"Seven murder cases were linked to extortion, four to secret societies, and three each to concealing birth and kidnapping, while 167 cases remain undetermined.
"Although the number of cases appears small, the increasing trend from 2021 to last year is concerning.
"However, the police, through the CID, remain committed to solving all reported murder cases, with approximately 95 per cent of cases successfully resolved," he said.
