First body found after Lundu boat capsize tragedy

LUNDU: The body of a secondary school student, Vilkie Wilson was found floating in a river here this morning by villagers involved in a search and rescue operation of a boat capsize incident here.

A spokesman of the Lundu Fire and Rescue Department said the body of the 15-year old SMK Senibong student was found floating about 11.58am, 10m away from the spot of the incident in Sungai Kayan.

Kampung Selampit residents, who were helping rescue agencies in the SAR, had found Vilkie's body.

The SAR is ongoing for another two female students, Alsma Anak Jithil, 14, and Helena Fasha Petrus, 17, who are still missing.

Apart from Fire and Rescue Department personnel, the search and rescue operation also involved the police, marine police, Civil Defence Department, Sarawak Rivers Board and villagers of Kampung Selampit.

The boat, with 20 passengers including 16 students on board, capsized while it was crossing Sungai Kayan about 6.10am yesterday.

The students were on their way to school when the mishap occurred.

A Lundu Fire and Rescue station spokesman had said three students went missing and were feared drowned while other passengers managed to swim to safety to the river bank.

The SAR operation had been suspended about 5pm yesterday due to inclement weather and resumed at 7am today.
