Lundu boat tragedy: Body of another missing victim found

KUCHING: The body of the second of three victims who were reported missing in the boat tragedy in Sungai Kayan, Lundu, about 72 km from here, was found at 5.30pm today.

Acting Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department director Tiong Ling Hii said the body of Helena Fasha Petrus, 16, was recovered by members of the search and rescue team about 1km downstream from the location of the boat capsize incident.

"The body has been handed over to police for further action," he told Berita Harian and Harian Metro.

This morning, rescuers found a male student's body, Vilkie Wilson, 15 at 11.58am. The team will continue to search for the last missing victim Alsma Jithil, 14.

Three students, including two girls, were missing after a boat they were on capsized while crossing the Sungai Kayan in Kampung Selampit, Lundu, about 6.10am yesterday.

Fifteen students from SMK Senibong, another student from SMK Lundu, four villagers including the boat's helmsman were on the boat.

The Fire and Rescue Department were notified of the incident at 6.33am. A team from the Lundu Fire and Rescue station rushed to the scene

The SAR was activated in the morning yesterday and included divers from the Batu Lintang Fire and Rescue Department, canine units, police, Territory 5 Marine Police Force, police drone unit, Sarawak Rivers Board, Civil Defence Force and local residents.
