KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will continue to demand justice and a full pardon for its imprisoned former leader Datuk Seri Najib Razak, the party's secretary-general said today.
In his speech at the Umno General Assembly which began this morning, Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said 72 of the 171 Umno divisions submitted motions related to a pardon for Najib.
"Seventy-two (motions) requested that we continue demanding justice and a full pardon for our leader, Najib.
"As long as our leader is trapped behind bars, Umno's demand for justice will never cease.
"Give (us) your full trust, have confidence in the top leadership, and continue to pray, as prayer is our weapon."
Najib was initially given a 12-year jail sentence and fined RM210 million after his conviction for corruption involving RM42 million of SRC International funds.
The former prime minister is currently serving his sentence in Kajang Prison.
Earlier this year, the Federal Territories Pardons Board, chaired by the then King, Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, halved Najib's jail term and reduced his fine to RM50 million.
Najib has filed an appeal to serve out the remainder of his six-year jail sentence under house arrest, citing an alleged supplementary royal order signed by the former King allowing him to do so.
