School clerks rushed to hospital for suspected ammonia gas inhalation

KOTA KINABALU: Three clerks from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Likas were rushed to the hospital due to suspected inhalation of ammonia gas, earlier today.

The trio experienced shortness of breath and vomiting.

The incident was confirmed by Sabah Education Director, Datuk Raisin Saidin.

Two of the clerks received treatment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (HQE), while the other was taken to HQE 2.

Raisin said that the incident occurred around 1.30pm.

"A gas leak, suspected to be ammonia, was reported at the SK Likas General Office at around 1.30 PM today.

" However, no students were affected except for the three clerks in the general office of the school," Raisin said in a statement.

Their condition is reported to be stable.

The school also sought immediate assistance from the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) team of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Sabah to monitor the situation.

Raisin added that Hazmat's assessment found the air quality at the site to be normal.

"Hazmat also found no radioactive residues or chemical leaks.

"However, they instructed that the General Office be left open overnight.

"Overall, Hazmat's inspection confirmed that the air quality around SK Likas is safe and under control," he said.

The incident did not affect the teaching and learning sessions at the school.

However, the school has been directed to ensure the safety of students and staff.
