Teenager pleads guilty to reckless riding and injuring police officer

SEREMBAN  A 17-year-old teenager pleaded guilty today at the Seremban magistrate's court to charges of reckless and dangerous riding against traffic, resulting in injuries to a police officer in July.

However, no sentence was imposed today on the accused, who appeared in court in a wheelchair, after he pleaded guilty before magistrate Marlissa Mohd Fahmy.

According to the charge, the accused was riding a Yamaha Y15ZR motorcycle in a reckless and dangerous manner, against traffic, which caused serious injury to a traffic police officer. 

The incident occurred around 2am on July 28 at Kilometer 36 southbound of the Kajang-Seremban Highway (Lekas).

The offence is punishable under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

If convicted, the penalty could include imprisonment for up to five years and a fine of not less than RM5,000 and not more than RM15,000, as well as being prohibited from holding or obtaining a driving license for a minimum of five years. If on a probationary license, it could be revoked.

Deputy public prosecutor Noor Syafina Mohd Radzuan requested a new date for the facts and sentencing while awaiting a report on the accused's character, as the teenager is a minor.

The accused who was unrepresented requested for a lower bail amount.

The court subsequently set bail at RM1,500 and scheduled the next mention for facts and sentencing on Nov 20.

On July 28, it was reported that both the police officer and the teenager were seriously injured after their motorcycles collided at Kilometre 36 (southbound) on the Lekas Highway at 2am during 'Ops Samseng Jalanan'.

It is understood that the crash was caused by the teenager's negligence in riding his motorcycle against the flow of traffic, leading to the collision with the officer.

As a result of the accident,  the officer suffered severe head injuries and was admitted to the intensive care unit before being moved to a regular ward.
