NIBONG TEBAL: Children and infants have been rescued from a welfare home linked to GISB Holdings (GISBH) in Penang.
Police and officers from the Seberang Prai City Council and the Penang Welfare Department were seen at the children's home in Changkat Nibong Tebal this morning.
It is understood that some people were taken away in police vehicles, while the rescued children and infants were placed into a van.
Details of the raid, including the number of rescued children were not available at time of writing.
The New Straits Times has reached out to state police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad.
Meanwhile, several businesses linked to GISB Holdings (GISBH) in Penang have closed down.
These include eateries, grocery stores and second-hand clothing shops. The shops' signboards and banners have also been removed.
A local resident in Lahar Yooi, in his 50s, said the business premises linked to GISBH have been closed since it made the headlines.
"We don't see any workers there anymore," he said.
Yesterday, state religious authorities said they were closely monitoring GISBH.
GISBH is now the focus of a police investigation after raids were conducted on 20 welfare homes allegedly linked to the group last week. The raids saw 402 people, some as young as 1-year-old, rescued.
Police said the victims had endured various forms of exploitation and abuse, including being sodomised.
GISBH has since denied the allegations of child exploitation and sexual abuse.
