72-year-old lawyer charged with causing hurt to woman [WATCH]

IPOH: A 72-year-old lawyer has pleaded not guilty at the magistrate's court to voluntarily causing hurt to a woman in the parking lot of a hypermarket here in February.

The accused, Goh Suan Poi, made the plea before Magistrate Evangelin Simon Silvaraj after the charges were read to her.

Goh is accused of voluntarily causing hurt to Ashvinder Kaur, 35, at the parking lot of Aeon Kinta City at 6.46pm on February 18.

The charge, framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, provides for imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Monisha Pandey requested RM1,000 bail.

Meanwhile, Khairil Azwar Khalil, who represented the accused, requested a low bail, considering that the accused was a former teacher from 1976 to 1997 before becoming a lawyer.

Additionally, Khairil Azwar stated that his client has cooperated with the police throughout the investigation into the case.

The court then set bail at RM500 with one surety and fixed November 11 for mention.

Outside the court, Goh's former students from Malay College Kuala Kangsar, including Datuk Seri Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid, who is now Perak state Speaker and former Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council President Zulqarnain Mohamad.
