Couple steals oil palm fruit but car catches fire

JASIN: A couple's plan to steal 30 bunches of palm fruit, weighing approximately 700 kilogrammes, from a plantation in Merlimau was thwarted when their car veered off the road and caught fire in Kampung Bukit Kepok last week.

According to Utusan Malaysia, Jasin district police chief Deputy Superintendent Ahmad Jamil Radzi said both suspects were detained in front of the Merlimau police station at 11.15pm on Monday when they came to file a report about their car.

Ahmad Jamil said the 26-year-old husband has been remanded until Friday to assist with the investigation under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft. The 25-year-old wife was released yesterday.

"The theft was discovered by a police auxiliary member at the plantation, who noticed suspicious signs along the border of the plantation around 5pm on Oct 3. Upon inspection, he found palm fruits that had been detached from their bunches.

"The suspects' car crashed while they were attempting to transport the stolen fruits and subsequently caught fire, but they managed to flee the scene," he explained.

Ahmad Jamil also mentioned that both suspects have prior records related to criminal offences and drug-related cases.
