Hunger forces murder suspect out of hiding after a month, arrested in Keningau

KENINGAU: A 43-year-old man from the Philippines, wanted for the murder of his neighbour last month, was arrested after hunger forced him to leave his hiding place.

Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Keningau district police Criminal Investigation Division arrested the suspect in a bush area near an abandoned factory in Kampung Kauran at about 9pm on Wednesday (Oct 16).

District police chief Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai, when contacted yesterday, confirmed the matter.

"The team successfully arrested the suspect, who was hiding in the bushes near the factory," he said.

During interrogation, Yampil said the suspect admitted to stabbing the 58-year-old victim out of anger at Kampung Linkudau here, as the latter had helped his wife file a police report.

"After the incident, the suspect fled into the forest along Jalan Tenom and only emerged on Oct 15 due to hunger," he said.

He added that the suspect had been remanded for seven days for further investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
