KUCHING: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry conducted a raid on a shop in Jalan Setia Raja here suspected of violating the Supply Control Act 1961.
The officers seized 2,340kg of subsidised 1kg cooking oil in polybags and 936kg of 1kg coarse sugar, worth RM8,517.
Section 21 of the Supply Control Act pertains to the possession or control of controlled goods in suspicious circumstances. This provision ensures that traders and individuals do not unlawfully exploit or hoard controlled goods like subsidised cooking oil, sugar or other essential commodities.
The ministry said the raid was conducted following tip-off that the shop proprietor was illegally selling cooking oil online.
He faces a fine of up to RM1 million or jail term of up to three years, or both, for the first offence.
For the subsequent offence, he faces a fine of up to RM3 million or five years' jail, or both.
The ministry urges the public to lodge a complaint if they come across any suspected misappropriation of subsidised controlled goods.
