TAWAU: Police here arrested a drug syndicate runner with 10 packets of methamphetamine weighing 512.9g during an operation in Kampung Wakuba yesterday.
District police Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said police were carrying out Op Tapis about 1pm when they spotted a man on a motorcycle who was acting suspiciously.
"He was observed taking something out from the basket of his motorcycle when police approached him for inspection.
"However, the suspect attempted to flee, leading to a struggle before he was successfully detained," he said in a statement today.
Upon further inspection, police found ten transparent packets containing crystalline substances believed to be methamphetamine, with a total weight of 512.9 grams.
The 20-year-old suspect, said Jasmin, tested negative for drug use and had no criminal record.
He said the man has been remanded for seven days, until Nov 2, to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act for trafficking.
"Police are actively tracking down the drug distribution network linked to this case," he added, urging the public to provide information to help curb drug trafficking and abuse in the district.
