Court denies bail on food delivery rider who claimed trial to crashing into policeman

KUALA LUMPUR: A food delivery rider claimed trial at the Sessions Court today to crashing into a police corporal purportedly to evade inspection last week.

Muhammad Shamil Md Isa, who made his plea before judge Dr Azrol Abdullah, was accused of committing the act on A.Rajaratnam, 48, who was on a motorcycle, with the awareness that he could have caused death.

The incident occurred at 11.45pm at the traffic lights along Jalan Segambut in Sentul on Oct 21.

The offence under Section 307 of the Penal Code carries a maximum 10-year jail term and a fine upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Vivien Yeap Jie Xin did not offer bail but left it to the discretion of the court to do so.

In mitigation, lawyer Nurul Atikah Rusli asked the court to allow bail as her client was supporting his parents.

She said he earns about RM1,300 a month and is unmarried.

The court also heard how the incident unfolded after being asked by Azrol to explain.

Yeap said the accused and his girlfriend were in a car and were stopped by Rajaratnam for checks.

"The accused had instead accelerated his car and crashed into Rajaratnam.

"However, he did not suffer any injuries but his machine was dragged for about 300 metres by the accused's car," she said.

Azrol denied bail and set Dec 2 for mention.
