KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has called on the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) to redouble its efforts in the war on drugs.
"We do not want drug syndicates to take root in Malaysia and use the country as a transit hub.
"Among the measures we have taken includes maintaining a good working relationship and cooperation with our counterparts abroad, especially our neighbours," he told the New Straits Times.
He said information sharing was among the key factors that would be able to stop drug smuggling in its tracks as drug trafficking is a "borderless" crime.
"If we can share information on suspicious shipments or even receive information on similar activities, we can immediately act and make arrests and seizures.
"I believe these drug syndicates will take their business elsewhere if they continuously lose their product through our operations," he said.
Razarudin said continuous inter-agency cooperation would also put a dent in drug trafficking activities.
"My personnel will also continue to work closely with other government agencies including the Customs Department, National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada) as well as the Malaysian Checkpoints and Border Control Agency that will begin operations next year.
"I also want to issue a stern warning to the public to stay away from drugs and the syndicates responsible for distributing them. We will take action against those who abuse drugs as well as those who work with these syndicates," he said.
