GEORGE TOWN: A man, who was nabbed after police fired two shots at his car tyre last week, was charged at the Sessions Court here today with attempted murder.
Ammar Faris Zainulkifli, 31, claimed trial when the charge was read to him by the court interpreter before Judge Juraidah Abbas.
Ammar is alleged to have attempted to cause the death of Lance Corporal Mas Safiq Azizan Matzrol and Corporal Mohd Norhasmi Ab Razak, who were on crime prevention duties, by attempting to ram his car into them.
He was accused of committing the offence at Jalan Kelawai about 4.50pm on Oct 25.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Lee Jun Keong prosecuted while Ammar was unrepresented.
Lee asked the court to set bail at RM12,000 with one surety.
Ammar, however, pleaded for minimal bail as he needed to care for his ailing mother.
"I am doing land surveying job, earning RM1,200. I also have to care for my ailing mother.
"My father, who works just like me, will bail me out," he told the court.
Juraidah then set bail at RM7,000 with one surety,
She fixed Nov 20 for appointment of lawyer and documents submission.
It was reported that a man's reckless driving, endangering other road users, led to his arrest here last Friday.
Police were forced to fire two shots at the left front tyre of the suspect's Honda Civic.
A policeman had noticed the man behaving suspiciously in a car near the Tenaga Nasional Bhd substation on Jalan Kelawei and pursued him.
The policeman instructed the driver to stop for inspection but he accelerated and attempted to ram the policeman.
He then drove dangerously, colliding with several nearby vehicles, forcing policeman to fire two shots to stop the man.
