Penang man charged with murder of Pakistani

GEORGE TOWN: A man was charged at the magistrate's court here today with the murder of a Pakistani man last week.

Kiong Chan Kyam, 38, merely nodded to indicate he understood the charge which was read to him by the court interpreter before magistrate Mohamad Azlan Basri.

No plea was recorded as the case is under the High Court's jurisdiction.

Kiong is alleged to have murdered Rashid Mahmood, 48, at a shop in Lorong Burma about 4pm on Oct 21.

He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Syairah Aqilah Khalil appeared for the prosecution while Kiong was unrepresented.

Syairah asked the court to fix a date for submission of the chemist and post-mortem examination reports.

Azlan set Jan 21 next year for the submission of the chemist and post-mortem reports.

On Oct 21, a Pakistan man died while seeking treatment at a clinic on Jalan Datuk Keramat after being stabbed in Pulau Tikus here.

Initial investigations revealed that the victim was involved in a commotion with the main suspect at a shop when he was stabbed with a screwdriver.

The suspect fled the scene.

The victim's friends rushed him to the clinic.

The main suspect was arrested the following day at a house in Tanjung Tokong.

He was part of 11 people rounded up to assist in an investigation into the case.
