KUALA LUMPUR: Police will work with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to address the issue of paedophilia and child sexual grooming groups on social media accounts.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said investigations into the existence of these groups were ongoing.
"Action will also be taken through the Malaysian Internet Crime Against Children (MICAC) Unit under the Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division (D11) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bukit Aman.
"D11 and CID will get the information and assistance from MCMC and Meta on the matter," he said when contacted by the New Straits Times (NST) today.
The NST previously reported that the authorities were on high alert following the discovery of several social media groups that appear to be promoting the sexual grooming of children.
These groups, which have thousands of members, often contained sexually overt postings with pictures of children or pre-teens. Checks by the New Straits Times found some of these groups have been operating for years, with one even dating back to 2014.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil yesterday slammed Meta for failing to take action against Facebook groups linked to paedophilia and scams.
Fahmi said the ministry had received reports about Facebook groups harbouring criminal elements. He said the ministry had become frustrated with Meta's apparent inaction, which had led to these groups being active for several years.
