DEVON: A teenager who attacked sleeping students with hammers in a boarding school in Devon, in the UK, is a Malaysian.
The identity of the teenager, Thomas Wei Huang, 17, who has been jailed for life, was initially kept from the public.
However, a UK judge has now lifted the reporting restriction, allowing Wei Huang's name to be reported.
According to Sky News, Wei Huang was 16, when he attacked his dormmates, two boys, at Blundell's School in Tiverton, Devon, in June last year.
Both victims suffered skull fractures and injuries to their ribs, spleen, and internal bleeding. One suffered a punctured lung.
Wei Huang also attacked a teacher who tried to intervene, hitting him over the head repeatedly with a hammer.
"I stumbled backwards into the corridor. There was a second blow - I can't remember if it was before I stumbled back - that's a little bit hazy for me," said the teacher, Henry Roffe-Silvester.
Hearing the commotion, another student called the police.
Wei Huang admitted attacking the students and his teacher but claimed he was sleepwalking.
He was later charged with attempted murder but pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
However, the Exeter Crown Court which heard the case, was told that Wei Huang had an obsession with killing children and hammers.
He said he kept hammers by his bed in case of a "zombie apocalypse".
At sentencing last month, Judge Johannah Cutts said it was clear that Wei Huang planned his attack, knowing full well that the victims could have been killed.
Cutts said there was a "significant risk" that Wei Huang could repeat his attack and as such, he posed a "high level of danger" to the public.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment and must serve a minimum of 12 years in jail.
