SUNGAI GOLOK: Six Malaysians, including a popular modern dikir barat singer, were arrested in south Thailand for possession of 6,000 pills worth more than RM90,000 here early yesterday.
The six were detained at a hotel here around 6am. They were believed to have crossed over to the border town for leisure over the Deepavali holidays.
Sources said a Thai police party went to the hotel after receiving information on drug activities.
"After raiding one of the rooms in the hotel, they detained three women and three men, including the singer.
"Further checks discovered the pills and the six, aged 25 to 32, were arrested," said the local sources.
The sources said two individuals managed to escape.
Among the six suspects, two of them were found to have crossed over to Thailand via an illegal jetty along Sungai Golok.
One of the sources said one of the three arrested women was a popular modern dikir barat singer from Kelantan.
"The six are being held at the Sungai Golok police station and will be brought to Narathiwat court soon for remand," he added.
It is learnt that Sungai Golok police had informed its Kelantan counterpart about the arrests yesterday. The NST is trying to reach the Kelantan police chief for comment.
