6 Malaysians held in Thailand over drug possession to remain in jail pending investigation

KOTA BARU: The six Malaysians detained by Thai police last Friday for alleged drug possession cannot be granted bail and will remain in jail pending investigation.

"Under Thailand's drug laws, anyone caught with more than 200 of Yaba pills, cannot be released on bail while the investigation is being carried out," said a Thai police spokesman.

The police spokesman said the Narathiwat court yesterday allowed police to detain the six — three men and three women — for up to 84 days.

"The 84 days are to enable police to complete all its documents related to the case.

"Thai police will refer the case for prosecution if there is strong evidence," said the spokesman.

A court spokesman yesterday said the investigators could interrogate the suspects every 12 days during this period.

A modern dikir barat singer and her husband are among the six who were caught with 6,000 yaba pills in Sungai Golok town last Friday.

Under Thai law, those convicted of drug possession can be sentenced to between 10 and 15 years' jail and fined 200,000 baht.
