Malaysian man arrested in Australia over 100kg of meth

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian man has been arrested by the Australian Federal Police on suspicion of smuggling 100kg of methamphetamine into the country recently.

The 45-year-old suspect was detained after the Australian Border Force (ABF) discovered the drugs concealed in computers sent via air cargo from Malaysia on Oct 16.

In a statement, the AFP confirmed the seizure of 100kg of methamphetamine, but did not disclose the estimated value.

They said ABF officers removed the drugs before allowing the shipment to proceed.

"The shipment was sent to a storage unit in Kingsgrove (south of Sydney) on Oct 30 before it was collected by the suspect," police said.

"The man was detained by the Australian Federal Police for attempting to possess a commercial quantity of border-controlled drugs involving 100kg of methamphetamine, an offence under Section 307.5 of the Commonwealth Criminal Code 1995.

"The suspect appeared in Downing Centre Local Court on Oct 31 and, if convicted, could face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment."

Authorities noted that the seized drugs could yield up to one million illegal street transactions.

Acting ABF commander Matthew O'Connor said syndicates were attempting various methods to smuggle drugs into Australia.

"They try to conceal prohibited substances in creative ways to avoid detection.

"However, our officers have the capabilities to detect and counter such crimes through collaboration and information sharing between local and federal authorities."
