GERIK: Authorities are tracking down thieves suspected of mutilating and skinning the carcass of a tiger that was killed in a road accident along the East-West Highway.
Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Yusoff Shariff said many of the tiger's parts, including its skin were missing.
He said his team is working with the police to find those responsible for mutilating the tiger.
Members of the public with information on the accident are urged to contact the police or Perhilitan.
"Anyone who has taken any parts of the tiger's carcass including its skin, fangs, bones, claws, or whiskers, please hand them over to Perhilitan immediately to avoid action being taken," he said when contacted today.
Earlier, a video of the tiger's carcass on the road with most of its skin missing. Another video shows only the tiger's head on the road.
He added that those found guilty of possessing any parts of the Malayan Tiger without permission could be fined a minimum of RM150,000 and up to RM1 million, or imprisoned for up to 15 years under the Wildlife Conservation Act.
The Malayan tiger is critically endangered, with an estimated 150 left in the wild as of 2022.
