ALOR STAR: The Customs Department seized 27,336 litres of various brands of liquor during an inspection on a trailer in Port Klang, Selangor last Friday.
Kedah Customs director Nor Izah Abd Latiff said acting on information, a team from the Sungai Petani Enforcement Branch, assisted by the Customs Operational Battle Force Response Assault (COBRA) inspected the trailer at 3.45 am.
"A check on the trailer found various types and brands of liquor, believed to have been imported, and beer with Malaysia Duty Not Paid (MDNP) status, with an estimated value of RM281,454 and RM611,097 in unpaid duty," he said in a statement today.
He said the alcoholic drinks with the MDNP status were for the Duty-Free Island market.
All the confiscated liquor was taken to the Sungai Petani Enforcement Office for further action and the case is being investigated under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
The public is advised to assist Customs in combating smuggling, particularly of cigarettes, liquor, firecrackers, and drugs by providing the information to the Customs via a toll-free line at 1-800- 88-8855 or the nearest Customs Office.
