Kedah cops nab man, rescue 7 Myanmar nationals in anti-trafficking bust

ALOR STAR: Sharp-eyed policemen foiled a human trafficking attempt involving a local man after he was caught transporting seven illegal immigrants following a 2km chase on Tuesday.

Kubang Pasu police chief Superintendent Mohd Redzuan Salleh said the patrol team spotted the man behaving suspiciously while behind the wheel of a vehicle near the Plus Expressway's southbound exit in Malau.

"As the team tried to approach the vehicle, the driver suddenly sped off before crashing at a T-junction in Asun, Jitra.

"Following the crash, the 28-year-old driver tried to flee, but the policemen responded swiftly to apprehend him," he said in a statement.

Redzuan said upon inspecting the vehicle, the policemen found seven Myanmar nationals, comprising five men and two women.

He added that the immigrants, aged between 26 and 43, were subsequently arrested for failing to produce valid travel documents.

The local man is being investigated under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 while the illegal immigrants are being investigated for violating the Immigration Act.
