SETIU: Police seized 200 kilogrammes (kg) of methamphetamine, estimated to be worth RM6 million, from a luxury vehicle which had crashed in Kampung Guntong Luar, here, on Wednesday.
The drug haul is the largest by state police this year.
Terengganu police chief, Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin, said they received a tip-off on suspected drug trafficking activities involving a black Toyota Vellfire travelling along a federal road.
He said a police MPV had tracked the vehicle, which was travelling from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, to Kuala Terengganu via Kampung Bintang, around 11.45am.
"Police trailed the vehicle for five kilometres before it disappeared from view due to heavy traffic and the hilly terrain.
"However, police later found the vehicle, which had crashed at the end of the road in Kampung Guntong Luar.
"The driver of the vehicle had fled the scene," he said at a press conference at the Setiu police headquarters today.
Also present was Terengganu deputy police chief, Datuk Wan Rukman Wan Hassan.
Khairi said checks in the vehicle revealed eight white sacks, each containing 25 transparent plastic packets suspected to contain methamphetamine, weighing a total of 200kg and valued at RM6 million.
"This is the largest drug haul in Terengganu this year. The drugs were believed to have been smuggled in from a neighbouring country for the Klang Valley, and could cater to around 200,000 addicts," he said.
He said the authorities did not dismiss the possibility of more suspects.
"Efforts to track down the suspect are ongoing, with the assistance of the police K9 unit and fingerprint analysis by the forensic team," he said.
He said checks on the vehicle revealed that the chassis number had been tampered with and that it was fitted with a fake registration number.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
