8 men killed in Sarikei-Sibu Highway crash

SARIKEI: Eight men were killed in a two-vehicle head-on collision along Sarikei-Sibu Pan Borneo Highway this afternoon.

District Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Haron Jenai said two other men in a four-wheel drive vehicle, however, sustained injuries and received treatment from the medical personnel from the Sarikei hospital.

"The deceased, seven Indonesians and a local, died on the spot," he said in a statement.

He said the impact of the crash threw two of them out of the vehicle, and they were confirmed dead by the medical personnel.

It took the firemen some time to retrieve the bodies of six victims inside the wreckage, he said.

He said the bodies of the eight men were handed over to the police.

He said the Sarikei fire station received a call about the accident at about 3.40pm.
