KUBANG PASU: Two men died after they were trapped in a sewer near SMK Paya Kemunting in Jitra here today.
Kedah Fire and Rescue Department Zone 1 chief Ahmad Aminudin Abd Rahim said a team was dispatched after receiving a distress call at 9.30am.
He said that the two men, aged 31 and 27, were confirmed dead by Health Ministry personnel at the scene.
"There were two men in the sewer and the sewer depth was estimated to be 4.50 metres.
"The team used rescue equipment and complete personal protection gear to enter the sewer and successfully extracted both the victims," he said in a statement today.
He said the bodies were handed to the police for further action.
"The rescue team used a gas detector to ensure the gas level at the location was safe and is awaiting the forensic team from the police before proceeding with the next step," he added.
