Customs seize RM35.45mil in smuggled goods across Klang Valley

KLANG: The Customs Department has seized drugs, electrical equipment, chemicals, and luxury vehicles valued at over RM35.45 million in a series of raids across the Klang Valley.

Department Central Zone assistant director-general Norlela Ismail said that one of the operations targeted a courier company warehouse in Bukit Jelutong, where officers discovered 448g of ganja worth RM13,555 concealed in a box.

"The contents were declared as customised wedding decor, and the shipment had originated from the Americas," she told reporters at the North Klang Customs Office here today.

In another operation on Oct 9, she said Customs personnel inspected seven containers at North Port, leading to the seizure of electrical goods valued at RM1.2 million.

"The goods, consisting of vacuum cleaners, air fryers, lamps, fans, washing machines, smart televisions, portable monitors, blenders, water dispensers and induction cookers, were believed to have been brought into Malaysia to be sold online," she said.

She added that they were falsely declared as televisions, table fan parts, and emergency lanterns to circumvent import regulations requiring approval from the Energy Commission (EC).

Norlela said on Nov 5, Customs personnel at Westport discovered 160 barrels containing 26,400 litres of smuggled ethanol worth RM2.5 million.

"The chemicals had been imported without the necessary permit," she said.

Norlela said in another raid, they seized seven luxury vehicles worth RM1.09million following inspections of 29 warehouses in the Klang Valley under Op Terma between Oct 7 and Oct 30.

The operation also involved inspecting 926 vehicles, with RM18.65 million in duties paid for 281 vehicles, while 638 vehicles were found to be in compliance with regulations.

"We remain vigilant in our efforts to prevent the smuggling of illegal goods and to ensure compliance with import regulations," she said.
