Gardener loses RM120,000 savings in Facebook investment scam

KUANTAN: A gardener's dream to earn extra income was dashed after he suffered losses amounting to RM120,000 in a Facebook investment scam that purportedly promised profits up to 80 per cent.

Excited about the opportunity, the 51-year-old victim withdrew his savings to invest it is the scheme last month.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the victim from Jerantut had spotted the investment scheme known as 'Moomoo' through Facebook on Nov 6.

"The scheme offered through Facebook promised returns of up to 80 per cent from the total amount invested. The victim made three transactions amounting to RM120,000 into a bank account provided by the 'agent'.

"The victim did not receive any returns as promised by the agent and realised that he had been duped. He lodged a police report yesterday," he said in a statement today.

Yahaya said the case was investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

He urged the public to check bank account and telephone numbers of those running investment schemes on https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my before performing any transaction.
